I believe your counsellor should make you feel comfortable. You should feel that you can trust them with whatever you need to tell them and they will tell you will happen with any information you share. You should feel that they can add to your knowledge, but also empower you to find your own wisdom. They should 'teach you how to fish and not just feed you'.
This may mean that you have to try a few different people to find one that you feel you can relate to. You will also have to invest some time in this working relationship with them. You may find you are best assisted by a different counsellor for differing issues or times.

Many of your thoughts and behaviours become automatic over our lifetime. Most of the time we put little thought into investigating our reactions of things. These habits and automatic reactions will take time to evaluate and re-learn. Consequently counselling may need to be reinforced as you integrate your learning at deeper and deeper levels. You should not be unreasonable with yourself by expecting an instant cure in one session. Awareness can happen in a moment but integration of this knowledge can require a lifetime.
